In fast-paced urban life, modern offices have transcended mere workplaces – they now serve as vital vessels for employee creativity and well-being.
PPCG’s recently completed renovation for a U.S. tech giant’s Shanghai branch perfectly embodies this philosophy. Through co-creation with the client, the project achieved not only efficient spatial upgrades but also integrated eight surprisingly thoughtful details that embed human-centered design into every square inch.
01
Color Narrative
Floral Streetscapes Flow Through Meeting Rooms
As a global tech leader, the client mandates that each office reflect both corporate identity and local character – "Unique Design for Every City."
PPCG’s design team immersed in Shanghai’s history, drawing inspiration from historic architectures like Qibao Town, Rong’s Residence, and Zhang Garden. Vermilion tones from classical Shanghainese buildings were adopted, while "window-pattern" glass wallpaper artfully narrates the city’s evolution from Shikumen to skyscrapers. This vibrant hue energizes meeting spaces, sparks creativity, and elevates user experience.
The client’s breakthrough vision enabled this bold palette. Such intense vermilion is rare in conventional offices, yet the client embraced it with inclusive openness. This chromatic innovation shatters stereotypes about work environments and vividly interprets the brand’s core values: innovation, inclusivity, and diversity.
02
"Stealth" Construction
Respecting Business Continuity
The toughest challenge in renovations often lies not in design execution, but in minimizing operational disruption.
PPCG implemented a "Stealth Construction" strategy:
- Rigid barriers fully isolating construction zones
- Professional dust containment and noise control systems ensuring tranquility
- Post-work professional cleaning to "office standards" (not construction-grade) daily.
Result? Employees wiped desks with their hands – not a speck of dust remained.
Concurrent operations + construction completed with PPCG’s 27 years of expertise, maximizing client productivity and economic efficiency.
03
Sustainable Wisdom
Long-Term Wall Maintenance
For meeting room walls, PPCG rejected short-term aesthetics for forward-looking low-maintenance solutions. Unlike ceiling finishes, TV walls used acoustic panels in matching tones. Identical color + varied textures enriched spatial depth.
Crucially, these panels:
- Ensure acoustic privacy
- Reduce damage repairs by >70% vs. conventional paint
- Integrate "design-as-maintenance" philosophy to eliminate future operational hassles.
04
Light Alchemy
Vision-Protecting Anti-Glare Fixtures
Lighting featured custom pendant lamps blending classical-modern aesthetics with three hidden innovations:
1. Anti-glare technology protecting visual health
2. Hollow structure enabling easy bulb replacement
3. Height alignment ensuring unobstructed TV views
During customization, PPCG’s veteran expert drafted sketches on-site to expedite manufacturer communication, slashing coordination time.

Gentle Sound Control
Dual Noise Cancellation
Within MEP systems, the "human-centered" philosophy was rigorously implemented to minimize noise.
Noise sources such as fan units were enclosed within storage rooms, effectively preventing direct interference with meeting spaces and significantly reducing low-frequency operational noise. Acoustic baffle valves were added to ductwork systems to precisely control airflow velocity and turbulence noise, effectively mitigating duct reverberation and resonance effects. This dual mitigation approach – targeting both noise sources and transmission paths – ensures a quiet, focused environment in meeting areas, particularly optimal for high-frequency video conferences and voice communication scenarios
06
Air Revolution
Invisible Freshness Guardian
To ensure air quality, dedicated exhaust systems were installed in back-of-house storage areas to:
- Enhance air circulation
- Expel odors/stale air
- Maintain fresh, health-optimized environments
07
Healing Balcony
Spatial + Hygienic Optimization
In renovating the balcony, PPCG’s team replaced the original linear greenery layout with a terraced configuration, creating a three-dimensional landscape defined by a "layered interplay of heights and voids" for enhanced visual aesthetics. The elevated planter boxes (raised above ground level) delivered triple functional advantages:
1. Liberated under-deck space improves air circulation and natural light penetration, eliminating the "light-blocking effect" of traditional linear troughs;
2. Reduced moisture accumulation and debris buildup enhances drainage efficiency while simplifying cleaning and maintenance of sub-structure areas;
3. Reclaimed floor space enables circulation paths, equipment placement, or integration of secondary lighting designs, increasing overall flexibility.
Dubbed the "natural oxygen bar" by employees, the transformed balcony has become a popular destination for midday breaks and brainstorming sessions.
08
Underfoot Care
Carbon Reduction + Heel-Friendly Design
Embracing sustainability, balcony flooring uses recycled fiber-wood plastic composite (from textile waste):
- Carbon reduction: 97.28kg CO₂e for balcony area (5.12kg/m²)
- Durability: Superior UV/water/mold resistance vs. teak
The seamless jointing technique eliminated heel-trapping gaps – a subtle safety and dignity consideration for high-heel wearers. Client Collaboration Excellence
The client’s proactive involvement was pivotal: clear requirements, rapid decisions, and close collaboration accelerated progress, reflecting multinational operational efficiency. PPCG responded with meticulous execution and agile revisions, achieving "Triple Satisfaction" (client/employees/PPCG).
Detail defines excellence. Where global tech meets local design wisdom, this project redefines workspace value – beyond productivity vessels into vehicles of human care. As one employee noted:
"I can’t pinpoint what moves me, but my steps feel lighter entering this office daily." This is human-centered design’s ultimate triumph: When space learns tenderness, work gains warmth.
